For the past 21 years we have run a tenpin bowling league for people who have intellectual disabilities. The bowlers range in age from their early twenties to some now in their fifties and sixties. Their abilities vary from those who may never be brilliant bowlers but who enjoy the weekly get together, to those who are excellent bowlers, with a couple bowling in other week night leagues.
Many of our bowlers live and work at residential facilities and some live at home and work in sheltered employment or have jobs in the open market. At present we have about 55 bowlers with about 25 coming each week. During the year we have a few Alley Cats tournaments and our very top bowlers take part in other leagues and provincial tournaments. Some have participated at Special Olympics World Games as well.
The Alley Cats league bowls at Northcliff Bowl in Johannesburg from 09.00 to ±11.30 every Saturday. Anyone interested in seeing the Alley Cats in action (and perhaps knows someone who may wish to join) is welcome to come and watch. It’s a busy morning so please call first!
